Herwig Turk : immortality (1996 / 1997)
“Since it must be that evolution produces stability, then we can say that evolution moves towards immortality. This can be seen in genetics, in which (according to some definitions) genes are immortal.” (C. Joslyn, V. Turchin)
Frozen food corresponds to the lifestyle of our civilization and our notions of efficiency and pragmatism. It is quickly prepared, easy to handle and acceptable in taste. Long shelf-life and stackability are the indispensable premises of industrial production. The “Frozen Food Sculptures” become icons of denatured food. Extremely long shelf-lives suggest that frozen food has conquered time – an ironic nexus with the phantasma of eternal life. The idea of overcoming death by storage, stabilization, denaturization and instrumentalization is reminiscent of the old, yet always new dream of modern alchemists. (Herwig Turk 1996)
